And Brainstorming And Then Eating The Cake Too.

Oh my goodness. This afternoon was one the most amazing design-build adventures I’ve ever been a part of. Mind you, it was cake and we didn’t get to do any sort of ‘built’ imagining of possibility on the cake itself but:

1.The number of people who participated (over 100)

2.The large number of people (close to 100) who were unwittingly recruited to spread the Waller Creek word (through the brainstorm nametag for cake swap program).

3.The number of people of all ages who worked on the cake at the same time (almost 25), transforming twelve chocolate cakes into a wonderfully tasty and surprisingly beautiful creation.

……..was absolutely outstanding…….and tasty.

That’s right, six feet long.

Have we lost our minds? Probably.

An impossible feat? Maybe but we’re going to have a mighty fine time trying.

That’s right ladies and gents, as part of the East Austin Studio Tours, this Sunday the Waller Creek Is For Lovers Action And Adventure Society will be temporarily relocating to the Hope Farmer’s Market where we will be making a much tastier version of Waller Creek. That’s right, we’re going to celebrate Waller Creek by baking it and then eating it.

Why? Because there will be other fantastic events about changing public spaces at the Hope Farmer’s Market on Sunday and believe it or not, the cake will serve as a fantastic brainstorming tool for future possibilities.

Consider yourself handy with butter cream?

Have a few extra jujubees lying around?

Want to help make something ridiculous, tasty and celebratory with fellow some equally awesome folks?

Cake decorating begins promptly at 1.00 pm.

Group cake photo ops, followed by celebration, followed by eating begins at 2.30.

Want to bring some decorating supplies to make the cake even better?

We’d love it. Post what you’re going to bring on the event wall.

p.s. There will also be:

1.Waller Creek banner making and other endeavors for those who are less cake decorating inclined.
2.And an entire host of other events at the Hope Farmer’s Market about making great public spaces and having a good time through groups such as the Public Space Ninja’s, The Yellow Bike Choir, Minor Mishap Marching Band, Samba School, and various street dancers.

Waller Creek Is For Beasts And Diorama Making that challenges people’s perceptions of what happens in Waller Creek, AND gets them to look a bit closer at all of the fantastic things found in the Creek. Here are some more pictures from last weekend’s endeavors.

Dominoes and Talking Smack? Changing a place by talking about someone’s mom and playing games? What could be better on a Sunday afternoon at a brand spanking new time (4 pm) in a shiny new (as in we haven’t tried it) domino-themed place?

Dust off your best momma jokes, bone up on your dot counting and practice your throw so you don’t embarrass you and your kin. Thenhead on down to the fantastically strange domino shaped islands right smack dab in the Creek, just north of the Sixth Street bridge over Waller Creek (just east of Sixth and Red River).

This Sunday from 4.00-6.00 pm

What should you bring?

Your Waller Creek Explorer Pack including:

-A dish to share (can you top Kelley’s domino cookies?)
-A chair (you’ll be really sad without one)
-A table if you dare (dare, dare….we really do need them, seriously people- send an email- alex@publicworkshop.us if you can bring one)
-An extra set of dominoes if you care

And a Waller Creek tall tale to share.

All events come from ideas we dream up while playing in, on, around, and under the Creek. We applaud the unapologetically playful, we approve of the fantastically fantastical and we honor the happily hair-brained. We love it all, bring it!

The Waller Cups await the victorious. And maybe a dash of everlasting glory as well.

Strange and mysterious beasts were seen last Saturday along the creek.  Dinosaurs, superheros – the creek showed a side of itself we didn’t know was there.

What’s hiding in your drainpipe?

Bring:

1.Your most fantastic artistic collaborators.
2. A collection of plastic animals or beasts and action figures or Lego explorers.
3. A story, a children’s fable or a tale of an epic adventure that you might be inspired to recreate in Waller Creek.
4. Any other diorama making supplies that you think are appropriate.
5. A camera for documenting your fantastic scene(s).

A snack, a treat if you like- related to your diorama is even better.

I don’t know what you were planning on bringing today but this submission by Kelley makes me think the Waller Creek Is For Lovers Action And Adventure Society might need to get it together and make another trophy. Kelley was quite apologetic about the lack of the requisite two sides to the domino cookies but has promised to fix her grievous error for the rescheduled event.

We must admit that one bite or four of Kelley’s domino cookies erased any nitpicking about accuracy…….tasty. Or as Lucy often says in her thick English accent, delicious. So Kelley, you rock. And it goes without saying that you have motivated us to move even faster on the rescheduling of today’s sogged out event, if only to get to try the second round of your cookies even sooner.
